Analects Excerpts


子曰:「學而時習之,不亦說乎?有朋自遠方來,不亦樂乎?人不知而不慍,不亦君子乎?」
The master said, “To learn and then at the appropriate time put into practice what you have learned: is this not a pleasure?  To have friends arrive from afar: is this not a joy?  To be patient even when others do not understand: is this not the way of an accomplished person?” (Analects 1.1)

子曰:「吾十有五而志于學,三十而立,四十而不惑,五十而知天命,六十而耳順,七十而從心所欲,不踰矩。」
The master said,  “At age fifteen, I set my intent on studying; at thirty I established myself; at forty I was no longer deluded; at fifty I understood the mandates of Heaven; at sixty my ear accorded; at seventy I followed what my heart desired without transgression.”  (Analects 2.4)

祭如在,祭神如神在。子曰:「吾不與祭,如不祭。」
‘Sacrifice as if present,’ means: sacrifice to the spirits as if the spirits are present. The master said, ‘‘If I do not participate in the sacrifice, it is as if I did not sacrifice.”  (Analects 3.12)

子曰:「不仁者不可以久處約,不可以長處樂。仁者安仁,知者利仁。」
The master said, “One who is not humane can neither endure adversity nor feel enduring joy.”  (Analects 4.2)

葉公問孔子於子路,子路不對。子曰:「女奚不曰,其為人也,發憤忘食,樂以忘憂,不知老之將至云爾。
The Duke of She asked Zilu about Confucius.  Zilu could not answer.  The master said, “Why did you not say something like: “His way of being is so passionate that he forgets to eat, and so joyful that he forgets his worries.  He does not even notice that he is growing old.”  (Analects 7.19)

子曰:「若聖與仁,則吾豈敢?抑為之不厭,誨人不倦,則可謂云爾已矣。」
Confucius said, “How could I dare state that I am sage or even humane? All that can be said is that I act unflaggingly and instruct others untiringly.” (Analects 7.34)

席不正,不坐。
If the mat was not straight, he would not sit on it.  (Analects 10.9)

季康子問:「弟子孰為好學?」孔子對曰:「有顏回者好學,不幸短命死矣!今也則亡。
Ji Kangzi asked, “Of your disciples, who loved learning?”  Confucius responded, “There was Yan Hui who loved learning.  Unfortunately he had a shortened mandate, and he died.  Now there is no one.” (Analects 11.7)

顏淵死。子曰:「噫!天喪予!天喪予!」
[When his favorite disciple Yan Hui dies young:] “Alas.  Heaven is destroying me!  Heaven is destroying me!” (Analects 11.9)

敢問死。曰:「未知生,焉知死?」
“May I ask about death?” [The Master] said: “You do not yet understand life.  How could you understand death?”  (Analects 11.12)

子曰:「克己復禮為仁。」
Confucius said, “Overcoming the self and turning to ritual is how one becomes humane.” (Analects 12.1)

子曰:「無為而治者,其舜也與。」
Confucius said, “Not doing anything [wuwei] and yet putting things in order, this was Shun.” [Shun was one of the great sage kings.] (Analects 15.5)

子曰:「君子義以為質,禮以行之,孫以出之,信以成之。君子哉!」
Confucius said, “A cultivated person uses propriety to act upon his own raw substance, uses rites to practice it, uses modesty to bring it out, uses faithfulness to complete it.  How cultivated this is!” (Analects 15.18)

子曰:「人能弘道,非道弘人。
Confucius said, “It is not that the Way broadens humans; it is that humans broaden the Way.” (Analects 15.29)

子曰:「性相近也,習相遠也。」Confucius said, “People are similar to each other by nature; they diverge from each another because of practice.” (Analects 17.2)

祭如在,祭神如神在。子曰:「吾不與祭,如不祭。
He sacrificed as if present.  He sacrificed to the spirits as if the spirits were present.  The master said, “If I do not participate in the sacrifice, it is as if I did not sacrifice.”  (Analects 3.12)

子曰:「不仁者不可以久處約,不可以長處樂。仁者安仁,知者利仁。
The master said, “One who is not humane can neither endure adversity nor feel enduring joy.  Those who are humane feel at home in humaneness; those who are clever seek profit from humaneness.”  (Analects 4.2)

Yesterday I came across a YouTube video called Analog Trip, this video is about 6 K-pop idols went on a trip to Indonesia for holiday. My older sister was the one who recommend me to watch it a few months ago. The whole 12 series of their video were very good, but there are two episodes that left huge impression to me. If lucky, people could enjoy the 'Heaven Light', the 90 meter magnificent light that piercing through the cave To go in and out of the cave people have to work together.
